Rose Bay House

PRINCIPAL AND DESIGN ARCHITECT

Tony Legge

Set within the elevated contours of Rose Bay, this private residence reinterprets the spirit of mid-century modernism through an Australian lens. Legge & Legge drew inspiration from the architectural language of Palm Springs, with a design that celebrates clarity of form, seamless indoor-outdoor living and subtle yet luxurious material palette.

he home’s generous layout champions openness and visual continuity. Living areas are arranged to frame moments of vibrancy, through punchy upholstery, carpets and bright glimpses of the garden - while maintaining a flowing sequence of shared and private spaces .

The foundation of the architecture lies in a palette of clean white walls against refined timber panelling, sprinkled with geometric brickwork. Bursts of colour in the form of primary-shaded seating, graphic wallpapers and sculptural rugs, are carefully layered to restrain the exuberance.

Rather than uniform colour saturation, the design uses dramatic accents to define each zone. For example, bold sky-blue seating mirrors outdoor pools, while bold yellow tones distinguish guest bathrooms from adjoining private quarters. The five-bedroomed house celebrates the relationship between indoor and outdoor, with striped back thresholds and generous glazing leading to landscaped terraces.

The result is a confident architectural statement: an expressive home that remains composed, and beautifully lived-in.
